Shiraz/Viognier is an increasingly popular wine in Australia. This a blend of two grape varieties, Shiraz, the most popular Australian red wine variety and Viognier, a white wine variety from the Northern Rhone region of France. The famous Cote-Rotie is made from this blend, where it is grown on step terraces in the warm climate of the Northern Rhone. Viognier adds another dimension, it is used to lift Shiraz, making it more fragrant and slightly softer. The best examples have the Shiraz and Viognier co-fermented, rather than being blended together later. This allows the wine to be more harmonious and usually makes the Viognier less obvious.
