Description
Founded in 1992 by Swiss vintners Georg Fromm and Hatsch Kalberer, Fromm Winery has established itself as one of Marlborough’s most authentic, terroir-driven producers. The Clayvin Vineyard, planted on the north-facing slopes of the Southern Valleys in the early 1990s, is fully organic and renowned for yielding deeply expressive Pinot Noir of great concentration and finesse. The 2021 vintage was hand picked between March 4 and 9 under ideal late-season conditions, with small berries delivering excellent flavour definition. The fruit underwent spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, incorporating a significant proportion of whole berries to enhance aromatic lift and fine tannin structure. After fermentation, the wine matured for seventeen months in seasoned French oak barrels to integrate texture and savoury complexity before being bottled unfiltered in December 2022. Only 1,543 bottles were produced at 13.5 percent alcohol. In the glass it displays a bright garnet hue. Aromas unfold gradually, revealing violet, red cherry, wild strawberry, plum skin, dried herbs and subtle spice. The palate is poised and refined, combining concentrated red fruit and forest floor character with silky tannins, lively acidity and underlying minerality. The finish is long, precise and harmonious. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees Celsius; superb with duck, lamb or porcini dishes, and built to evolve gracefully over the next decade.
