Underhill is a separate south‑facing block at Yarra Yering planted with Shiraz in 1973.

Fermented mostly destemmed with some whole‑bunch inclusion, then aged 12 months in French oak puncheons with (approx.) 25% new oak.

The cool site and larger puncheons yield a savoury, medium‑bodied Shiraz with spice and fine tannins.

    • Description

Sourced from a single block planted in 1973, the 2017 Underhill Shiraz is a pure expression of Yarra Valley Syrah. Hand-harvested fruit was fermented with both destemmed berries and a portion of whole bunches, enhancing fragrance and structure. The wine was then matured for twelve months in large French oak puncheons, about 25% new, to preserve fruit clarity and add subtle seasoning.

The bouquet is lifted and detailed, with black cherry, blackberry and violet alongside notes of pepper, charcuterie and spice. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and precise, combining dark fruit and savoury complexity with vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins. A long, mineral finish underlines its cool-climate origins.

Elegant and ageworthy, this wine is drinking beautifully now but will develop further depth and character over the next decade.
